Maria Wæhrens: The Answer at Nikolaj Kunsthal

Created specifically for the historic Upper Gallery, The Answer unfolds as an immersive installation of more than 100 paintings, drawings and sculptural elements, transforming the exhibition space into one continuous composition. Paintings overlap and extend beyond the canvas, while painted textiles, sculptural structures and works made directly onto the walls dissolve the boundaries between painting, sculpture and architecture.

Beginning with a dream in which an angel appeared to Wæhrens, The Answer brings together central threads in her practice: the body and its transformations, spirituality, vulnerability, memory, and the persistent pursuit of freedom. Through an intuitive, deeply physical approach to painting, Wæhrens creates an expressive universe where bodies and identities remain fluid, and rawness and immediacy coexist with tenderness and beauty.

Maria Wæhrens was awarded for the exhibition by the Danish Art Foundation, and received outstanding reviews in both Berlingske and Politiken.
