For this year’s Liste Art Fair Basel, Danish visual and performance artist Miriam Kongstad presents a series of new, raw, and sensuous metal sculptures. Balancing materials such as steel, charcoal, stones, crystals, and scent, the works remain closely connected to the artist’s body while exploring alternative notions of health, healing, and illness in contemporary society.
For Kongstad, sculpture serves as an exploration of the body’s hidden infrastructures. Blood vessels, neural pathways, and sensory systems form the point of departure for works that move between anatomical precision and abstraction. She is particularly interested in the body’s capacity for healing and in how alternative medicine, aromatic scents, and other sensory stimuli can create connections between the body, consciousness, and its surroundings. Through these investigations, her sculptures evoke both the physical and immaterial dimensions of human experience, suggesting new ways of understanding the relationship between the body and the world it inhabits.
