• Overview

Agnes Karl Åxman’s (b. 1994) practice centres on painting as a space for radical acceptance and transformation. Moving between abstraction and figuration, their work draws on art historical traditions while exploring how meaning can emerge through composition, colour, and spatial intensity. Of particular significance, among others, are early Baroque female painters and their ability to give form to complex emotional states. Alongside these historical references, techno and club music inspire Åxman’s engagement with rhythm, intensity, and the body, which constitutes the painterly process understood as a space of release. Working in layers of oil paint, Åxman creates luminous, translucent passages alongside denser, earth-toned areas, allowing forms to emerge and dissolve between the recognisable and the abstract. Rather than constructing fixed narratives, the paintings privilege sensory and material experience, creating spaces in which meaning remains fluid and open-ended.
