OverviewU.T. (mørke rum), 2023/2024Maria Wæhrens (b. 1976), paints in an expressive and intuitive style. It can be said that her paintings contain every expressive artistic direction all at once, where the raw and unedited are allowed to take up space creating a documentary and lively expression. Wæhrens works both with automatic drawings, heavy materials and light paintings without any special rules or guidelines. The works are at once poetic and punk, violent, gentle and naive, and borders on the almost unfinished or incapable.Maria Wæhrens graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts 1999-2005 under Professor and internationally renowned artist Ursula Reuter Christiansen. Wæhrens have previously exhibited at Lviv National Art Gallery, Ukraine, KUNSTEN - Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Vejen Art Museum, The Museum of Religious Art, Møstings Hus, Art Center, Copenhagen, O - Overgaden - Institute of Contemporary Art, Den Frie Institute of Contemporary Art,, Kunsthal NORD and the Nivågaard collection. Her works are part of the collection at The Museum of Religious Art, the Danish Arts Foundation, HEART - Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, The National Gallery of Denmark and The New Carlsberg Foundation. In 2021 she received the three year grant from the Danish Arts Council.
